State of Acre, Brazil

The name Acre derived from the indian word Aquiri, which would mean "river of caymans". The State is entirely covered by the Amazon Jungle. The indian culture is strongly visible (indians taught the white men how to survive in the jungle), but the indian population is insignificant (last count, of 2000, registered only 2% of indians); most of population today are descendants of other Brazilians (particularly from Ceará) who migrated last century to work in the extraction of rubber.
