Caruaru, Pernambuco

Second biggest and most important city of Pernambuco, Caruaru is about 120 km West of Recife; the region is called "agreste", a middle term between the humid coastal climate of Recife and the highly arid zone of the "sertao", further to the west from Caruaru.
The city, founded in 1848, has about 250,000 inhabitants. The economy is based on commerce (the city is a distribution point for many of the smaller cities in the interior of Pernambuco, Bahia and other States; twice weekly, a famous fair, called
Feira de Caruaru
takes place in the city) and services (tourism).
Caruaru has some events which attract tourists:
- during the month of June, Brazilian tradition is to organize "festas juninas", and Caruaru claims to have the best of such parties in Brazil
- the popular art of Caruaru is famous all around Brazil, and was recognized by the Unesco
- during the Holy Week, the city of Nova Jerusalem, close to Caruaru, promotes the largest open air theatre show in the world, to play the last days of Christ
