From 1996 to 2000, the Gross Production of Ceará accumulated a growth of 11.9%, which translates to an yearly rate of 2.9%; this is higher than the average rate of Northeast and Brazil.

Ceará has the 14th largest economy in Brazil, and the 3rd largest in Northeast.
By economy sectors, the production is broken down like this: only 6.1% come from agriculture and animals breeding; 38.1% come from industry; 55.9% come from the services sector. Within this terciary sector, the most relevant sub-sector is Public Administration(check out Table 17.2)
The metropolitan area of Fortaleza (which includes neighbour municipalities like Maracanaú, Eusébio, Caucaia, Eusébio and others) respondes for about two thirds of the production of the entire State of Ceará; Fortaleza alone produces more than 43% of the total economic output of the State.
